A look into the Books... Songs of Solomon

The book Songs of Solomon can evidently be described as the book of love. The book is also known as the Song of Songs and was written by King Solomon, son of David.

Songs of Solomon contains eight chapters and reads as a dialogue between King Solomon and his Shulamite bride. The chapters illustrate words of admiration, eagerness and love towards one another and a desire to be close, even when they are apart.

The origins of the word Shulamite is believed to be from the Hebrew language and is in reference to the name Solomon. Other personalities who are mentioned in the book include the Shulamite bride’s brothers (Songs of Solomon 1:6b and 8:8).

The overall tone of the book exposes expressions of love between King Solomon and his bride. The reader is taken on the journey from the inception of their courtship through to the wedding procession. In the passage 5:2-8, the Shulamite woman shows concerns of the distance that is between her and King Solomon, however, with a reassuring response, he encourages her in the following verses of 6:4-7:9 and also describes of his wishes to see her in 7:10-8:4).

Biblical scholars believe that despite King Solomon’s numerous marital relationships – he had 700 wives and 300 concubines – his marriage with the Shulamite bride was seen as an enriching, warm relationship that was enjoyed on many levels.

The love and unity described between Solomon and the Shulamite bride can be closely linked to the love that God shows for the church as detailed in the New Testament, (Ephesians 5:25). Similarly the passage of 1 John 4:8-11 also expresses the love of God and how this can be shown to others through Him. The extended passage of 1 John 4:7-21 also illustrate further details of the love of God.

Minister's Corner: Love Like This

With the month of Valentines’ Day upon us, we take a look into the diverse subject of love. The passage of scripture in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, depicts the many facets of love.

Other passages in the Bible also describe love as being the very nature of God, (1 John 4:8 & 16b) along with the well-known verse, John 3:16.

The early verses in 1 Corinthians 13 (v.1-3) detail different valuable attitudes and actions such as prophesying, giving gifts to the poor and even giving up your life for someone, however it also states that without love being a key motive or ingredient, taking such steps would be useless.

According to the passage of scripture, attributes that describe what love is, include not being puffed up, envious, selfish, rude or counting wrongs, (v. 4-7). Also, the passage points out that attributes of love are patience and kindness, as well as believing and hoping in all good things. Another key feature of love is that it never fails (v.8).

The final verse states that of the three attributes, faith, hope and love, love is the most important – and this surely is not limited to Valentines’ Day, but throughout every day of the year.

Hope can be described as a state of mind that remains positive. It is greatly encouraged in Christianity and is seen as an important trait to develop and maintain.

Similar to faith, hope involves maintaining a positive frame of mind and beliefs, even when circumstances may be on the contrary. Hope is a way to provide encouragement in a situation where despair is preeminent. Biblical passages that relate to hope include Psalms 119:147, Romans 8:24-25 and Hebrews 11:1&7.

Hope has been a source of inspiration from biblical times through to the modern day. In the mid-19th Century, artist Francesco Guardi produced a work of art based solely on the word hope. US President, Barak Obama, has used the word hope to bring about positive attitudes amongst audiences and even for one of his book titles.

Valentine’s Day has been a source of inspiration for the month and our beauty pages are showing no exception.

We’ve taken a look at some beauty buys that have literally been infused with love. A unique website, called Not Mass Produced, showcases some, fragrant bath fizzes, delightful soaps – with some fashioned into love heart, while others take on the shape of flowers.

Travel: Florence in February

Whether you’re travelling for a romantic weekend or for weeks on end, Florence, the capital to the region of Tuscany in Western Italy will have just enough to keep you intrigued.

The city is steeped in culture and was the founding region of the Renaissance era in the 18th Century and previously the capital of Italy in the 19th Century. Florence was also one of the earliest founders of international commerce – coins for commercial use were first created in this city. These two elements have fashioned Florence into an area of great appeal.

You’ll find plenty to keep you on your toes, if you’re after culture, shopping and dining. Galleries galore await you in this spectacular city, which houses masterpieces from world renowned artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo Di Vinci and Botticelli. From the Galleria del’l Accademia to the Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the largest in the world, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Alternatively, museums including archaeological artefacts once belonging to the Medici family are ones to look out for, as well as the Museum of the History of Science. If after, you’ve worked up a thirst, then take a trip to the literary coffee shop Giubbe Rosse, which dates back to the 12th Century.

When it comes to dining, make sure one of the things to you dig into is the gelato, (ice cream). Gelateria dei Neri, Festival Del Gelato, Vivoli or Perché No, to name but a few, will provide you with something sweet to savour.

With Florence’s close proximity to other cities, you’ll also be able to enjoy day trips to other locations, for example; the city of Pisa, in which the famous leaning tower is located. For some spa therapy, you can enjoy the relaxing facilities at Impruneta’s Spa.

You can also take up the opportunity to learn skills that you can take back with you to savour the memories, such as glass bead making, cooking classes and even photography lessons. You’ll be creating your own masterpieces in no time.

Recipes: Caribbean Lamb & Clap-Hand Roti

Caribbean lamb and sweet potato curry with clap-hand Roti

Roti is the Caribbean equivalent of Indian paratha, traditionally served wrapped around a mild, dry West Indian curry and eaten with your hands. Step 7 below reveals where the name ‘clap hand’ comes from.

Serves 4 – Preparation 20 minutes – Cooking 1 hr 20 minutes for the curry, 20 minutes + 30 minutes’ resting for the roti.

Energy 824 kcals – Protein 49.1 g – Carbohydrate 69.6 g – Fat 40.6 g - Saturated fat 15.0 g – Fibre 5.5 g – Salt 3.27 g – Added sugars none.

3 tablespoons sunflower, 800g (1 1/3 lb) diced leg of lamb, trimmed of excess fat, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, crushed, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon ground turmeric, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons mild curry powder, 2 teaspoons garam masala, 1 x 200-g (7-oz) can chopped tomatoes, Juice of ½ lime, 300ml (10 fl oz) chicken stock, 2 small sweet potatoes, about 350 g (12 oz), peeled and cut into small dice, ½ teaspoon of salt.

FOR THE CLAP HAND-ROTI
225g (8 oz) plain flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 40g (1 ½ oz) chilled butter vegetable oil or ghee, for cooking.

1. Heat 1½ table spoons of oil in a large pan, add half the lamb and cook, turning, until nicely browned all over. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the rest of the oil and lamb.

2. Add the onion to the pan and cook until a rich golden brown. Return the meat to the pan with the garlic, spices, tomatoes and lime juice. Cover and cook gently for 5 minutes.

3. Add the stock and bring to the boil and simmer, part-covered, for 1 hour.

4. Meanwhile, make the roti. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the bowl of
a food processor; add the butter and process until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Transfer to a bowl and stir in 5 tablespoons of water to make a stiff but soft dough. Cover and leave in a warm place for 30 minutes.

5. Uncover the curry, add ½ teaspoon of salt and the sweet potatoes and cook uncovered for further 15-20 minutes until they are tender and the sauce has reduced and thickened.

6. When ready, knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth, then form into 4 balls, flatten slightly and roll out into 23-cm (9-inch) rounds about 5mm (1/4 inch) thick. Brush with the oil or ghee, fold in half, then into quarters, roll back into balls, and then roll out again.

7. Heat a dry, heavy-based frying pan or flat griddle over a medium heat. Brush each one in turn with a little more oil or ghee, add a roti to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, turning frequently and brushing with oil each time you do. Remove from the pan, place in your palm and clap your hands together. times, taking care not to burn yourself. Wrap the roti in a tea towel and keep warm while you cook the rest.

8. To serve, spoon some of the curry down the centre of each roti, roll up and serve hot.

Minister's Corner: Have a Fruitful 2012

For many people the New Year is the perfect chance for new beginnings, the opportunity for fresh starts. The New Year can also provide the boost to start things that can lead to increases throughout the year.

In the first book of the Bible, Genesis 1:11 the verse shows God’s work in creating things that can bear fruit not only in their present state but for their future.

Being fruitful is an attribute that has been implanted into every living being, and we are encouraged to know that everything needed to begin growing and increasing is within you.

The verse shows that God created herbs and fruit that were made to grow with seeds within them, meaning that their opportunities to be fruitful were encapsulated by an outer shell.

This reproduction pattern goes on to extended to all living beings, from animals and humans and is encouraged by God in the same chapter, (Genesis 1:28).

God has given mankind every opportunity to be fruitful. Research has shown that women are born with ovaries that contain ovaries, meaning that they hold their grandchildren as well as their own children. Thus the opportunities to be fruitful are bountiful in several areas of life.

In a similar manner, the parable of the talents – in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:12-28 – shows that the two good workers used what they had initially in order to multiply what they were given.

As the year unfolds, be encouraged to look within at the gifts God has given you using them to be fruitful and multiply.

What is... The Fruit of the Spirit?

“But the fruit of the Spirit…There is no law…” Galatians 5:22-23

The fruit of the Holy Spirit details personal traits and characteristics that Christians are encouraged to show. The fruits of the Spirit are described by the Apostle Paul. The fruits detailed in the scripture are as follows:

Love: Love has been described as the greatest gift shown from God towards man (John 3:16). The passage in Corinthians 13 also explains the elements of love and how it can be shown by actions and not only words.

Joy/Gladness: This is a state of mind that remains positive despite events that may oppose it. Happiness is known to be aas a frame of mind that is dependent on when things going positively. However joy and gladness remain through irrespective of good and bad times and this is an attitude that Christians are encouraged to embody, (1 Thessalonians 5:16).

Peace: The passages in Roman 12:18 and 14:19 states that ‘We should try to live peaceably with all men’, as well as this, the well know scripture in Matthew 5:9 explains that people who make and encourage peace are known as children of God.

Patience: Described as enduring under suffering, this attribute can relate to being patient with people or within trying situations. Christians are encouraged to implement patience in their lifestyle and to ‘endure the race set before them’, (Hebrews 12:1).

Kindness: Having a kind and compassionate heart towards people is seen as a main characteristic. Several passages in the Bible explain that Jesus was moved with compassion for people He came into contact with. Christians are also encouraged to maintain this in their lifestyle (2 Peter 1:7).

Goodness: This characteristic involves having a level of moral excellence and living in a positive praiseworthy manner. In doing so, people are putting into practice, being good, ‘even as God the Father is perfect’, (Matthew 5:48).

Faithfulness: The attribute of faith is an important aspect of maintaining a Christian lifestyle, as the passage of Hebrews 11:6 states that without it, it is impossible to please God.

Gentleness: Similar to kindness, gentleness is an attitude that involves being considerate, compassionate and fair to others. (Philippians 4:5) and (1 Timothy 6:11).

Self-Control: There are a number of areas of self-control that are encouraged such as controlling the tongue, (James 3:1-18). Similar to patience, self-control is seen as a sign of maturity (Proverbs 25:28).

Recipes: Muffins

A perfect way to start your day, fresh muffins. The marmalade can be substitute with dried fruits or nuts if desired.

Marmalade muffins
• Make 10 - Preparation 5 minutes - cooking 20-25 minutes
200g (7 oz) plain flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, A small pinch of salt, 40g (1 ½ 2 oz) stone ground wholemeal flour, 75g (3 oz) caster sugar, 175 ml (6 fl oz) milk, 1 medium egg, beaten, 100g (4 oz) butter, melted, Finely grated zest of 1 orange, 100g (4 oz) thick-cut marmalade, 2 tablespoons Demerara sugar, for sprinkling

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 oC/400oF/Gas mark 6. Line a muffin tray with 12 deep paper cases.

2. Sift the plain flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Stir in the wholemeal flour and caster sugar. Beat the milk, egg, melted butter and orange zest together, add to the bowl of dry ingredients with the marmalade and stir until only just mixed.

3. Spoon the mixture equally into the paper cases and sprinkle on top some Demerara sugar. Bake for 20-25 minutes until well risen and golden brown. Leave cool for 5 minutes, then serve warm. The muffins are best served on the same day they are made.

Recipes: Fruit Smoothies

The perfect start to your day – breakfast in a cup. So break out the blender and get whizzing. Just make sure you use really bright fruit, and sweeten the taste with a little sugar or honey. Alternative fruit flavours can be made such as a banana & strawberry smoothie, or even a forest fruit flavoured smoothie. The options are endless…

• Serves 1 – Preparation 2 mins, if that – cooking none

Mango, passion fruit and coconut

½ of a medium sized mango, peeled and flesh cut out away from stone
100ml (31/2 fl oz), coconut milk, 2 passion-fruits halved and juice rubbed through sieve, 2 teaspoons of fresh lime juice, 150 ml (5 fl oz) orange juice , A handful of ice cubes.

1. Simply put all the ingredients for the smoothie into a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can put everything into a large measuring jug and blend with a hard held blender, moving it up and down until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and serve

A Look into the Books... Ruth

The book of Ruth is based on a woman. The book is believed to have been written by the prophet Samuel after David becomes king, due to the fact that the book contains details of his ancestors.

One of only two women in the Bible to have books named after them – the other being the Book of Esther – Ruth is a pivotal personality in the Bible. The Book of Ruth begins in Jerusalem, during a time of famine. This pushes an Israelite woman, Naomi with her husband, Elimelech and two sons into a new country Moab (modern day Jordan), in search of food and a better life.

While in Moab, Naomi’s two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, marry Moabite woman, Ruth and Orpah. However Naomi’s husband and both of her sons pass away in Moab, and at the same time, news of growth and development in Bethlehem makes it appear that the trip appeared to be a wasted journey, (Ruth 1:1-5).

Naomi then chooses to return to Bethlehem, after the loss of her husband and both her sons. At a point in the journey, Naomi encourages her two daughters-in-law to return to their country and people, Orpah agrees to do so, (Ruth 1:1-15), but Ruth chooses to stay with Naomi, and cites one of the most well-known scriptures that relates to commitment, (Ruth 1:16).

On returning with Naomi to Bethlehem, Ruth takes up her mother-in-law’s Jewish customs and finds work that will support them both. Ruth fortunately finds work in a field, which belongs to Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s late husband. Ruth finds favour in his sight and is able to receive potions of crops, for Naomi and herself, (Ruth 2).

When Ruth explains to Naomi the help that Boaz is providing, she instructs her in a way that will develop a relationship between the two of them, (Ruth 3:6-9). After Boaz makes an agreement with a closer relative, he is able to marry Ruth, (Ruth 3:10-18).

After the marriage, Ruth gives birth to a son named Obed, (Ruth 4:1-16) who becomes the father of Jesse, and grandfather of David, the man, known as the great king in Israel and an ancestor of Jesus Christ; thus making an ancestral link between Ruth and Jesus, (Matthew 1:5).

The book of Ruth is one that illustrates courage, loyalty and the importance of unity and Godly friendship. The book also shows God’s amazing means of provision, as He allowed Ruth to work in exactly the right field, in order to meet and be connected with the right people.

Ruth also shows obedience and the blessings that it brings, not only to herself, but to her extended family and for generations to come.

Recipes: Gift Inspiration - Caramelised Red Onion Chutney

Ingredients: 2.5kg red onions (halved and sliced), 125g raw cane sugar, 375g Muscovado sugar, 560ml cider vinegar, 10g salt, 1tsp ground black pepper, 1tsp fresh thyme.

1. Cook the onions on a low heat. Stir gently and leave to cook for 30-40mins. After this add the cane sugar and cook for a further 5 minutes.
2. Add the Muscovado sugar and leave to cook for 5mins. Pour in the vinegar and cook for a further 5 minutes until thick. Stir in the pepper and thyme and spoon into sterilised jars.

Recipes: Gift Inspiration - Cherry Jam

Ingredients: 500g cherries, 500g jam sugar, 300ml water, 15ml lemon juice.

1. Pour the cherries into a heavy saucepan with the water, once its boiling turn down the heat and leave to simmer for 15mins.
2. Pour in the lemon juice and the jam sugar and stir until dissolved. Bring to the boil and stir occasionally for 10mins.
3. Once set, pour the jam mixture into sterilised jars.

Recipes: Gift Inspiration - Home-made fudge

Ingredients: 200g Demerara Sugar, 400g Caster sugar, 300ml double cream.

1. Pour all of the ingredients into a pan, and mix continually over a low heat until the sugar has melted.
2. Once the sugar is dissolved turn up the heat and leave to boil for 3-4mins.
3. Remove the pot from the heat and place in a bowl of ice cold water and stir until the fudge mixture thickens.
4. Once thick pour the fudge into a container and when it has cooled, cut into cubes and place into a container for yourself or as a gift.

The book of Revelations is the last book in the Bible and the in the New Testament. The name of the Book is taken from the Greek language and means ‘unveiling’ or ‘disclosure’ and this is in line with the location of where the book was written, within modern day Turkey, where Greek is spoken to this day.

The book was written by John, who at the time had been exiled to the island of Patmos and details events and illustrations that detail the end times. The book of Revelation contains seven visions that were witnessed by John. Within one of the visions, Churches and God’s people around the world are admonished and encouraged to remain focused, (Revelations 2 -3).

The book also contains warning for people who choose not to follow God’s word, (Revelation 22:14-15).

The third vision also contains the seven trumpets, which detail the plights that will affect the earth before Jesus’s final coming. The book of Revelation also details the battle that will ensue between the army of God and the enemy. This battle ultimately ends with the victory of God and His army.

Several passages in the book show details of the praise and worship that is given to God, such as in Chapter 4:8 & 11, 5:9-14, 7:12 15:3-4 and 16:5-6.

One of the key figures in the book is Jesus Christ. He is referred to in a number of ways including; a lion, which represents royal power (Revelations 5:5); a root, a representation of Jesus’s linage from David (Revelations 22:16); a rider on a white horse, which shows one who triumphs over evil (Revelations 19:11), and also the Lamb that was slain, an illustration of Jesus’s sacrifice on the Cross (Revelations 5:6).

Revelation also shows the various ways that the enemy tries to fight against God and His people, including the beast, and persecution of the Church, (Revelations 13-14). However the book also goes on to show God’s ultimate power and triumph over the enemy.

Passages in the Old Testament also illustrate the points mentioned in Revelation, such as Daniel 7-13, Isaiah 24-27, Ezekiel 37-41 and Zechariah 9-12. Revelations 21, describes Jesus’s second coming and also of all things becoming new, including the earth, heaven and Jerusalem. Chapter 22 of the book also includes Jesus’s promise of coming again soon, and the enthusiastic response of His people, (verse 20-21).

What is... The Armour of God?

“Put on the full armour of God…” Ephesians 6:11

The passage of scripture in Ephesians 6:10-18 uses pieces of armour as metaphorical representation of attributes that build a solid Christian foundation and lifestyle. The items of armour detailed in the passage and their respective purposes are as follows.

The Belt of Truth: This item can be explained as having the purpose of speaking the truth. In the passage John 10:10, Jesus describes Himself as the truth and so putting on the Belt of Truth can be seen as a way of representing Jesus. Within Christianity living a truthful life is a vital attribute.

The Breastplate of Righteousness: Living a life of righteousness is a way of living in right standing. Romans 14:17 describes the Kingdom of Heaven as a place where there is ‘righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost’. Thus living in righteousness is a way of living a life that’s right before God.

The Shoes of Readiness and Peace: Maintaining a life of peace and readiness is encouraged in developing a Godly lifestyle. Matthew 5:9 says that, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called Sons of God’. This encourages us to live in peace with God and with people around us.

The Shield of Faith: One of the most important attributes to maintain in a Christian lifestyle is faith. Hebrews 11:1 explains that without it, Christians cannot please God. The Shield of Faith is also the item of the armour that is used to protect against the attacks of the enemy.

The Helmet of Salvation: The Christian’s knowledge that they have salvation encourages a mind frame that lets them know they have been saved. Psalms 3:8 describes that Salvation belongs to God and so in putting on Salvation, the knowledge of God’s saving power is something that Christians can also put on.

The Sword of the Spirit: The final item of the Armour of God is seen as the active part, which is used for action as well as protection. The Sword of the Spirit is also shown to be the word of God that can divide the things that are necessary from those that are not (Hebrews 4:12).

The overall purpose of the armour of God is similar to armour in warfare. It is used for protection and battle and as each item serves its purpose, it allows the person applying each item to benefit from making use of each attribute.

1. Place the icing sugar, butter and vanilla extract into a bowl and mix together. Add the flour and mix into a firm dough and leave the mixture to chill in thea fridge for 20mins.
2. Pre-heat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5 and roll out the cookie dough mix over a floured surface. Cut into Christmas shapes with a knife orf cookie cutter and then bake for 10-12mins until lightly golden.
3. Remove the cookies and leave to cool. Make the icing topping mix with the sugar, water and food colouring. Spread over the cookies and if required add the edible balls. Leave the icing to set and your cookies are ready to enjoy as a Christmas treat or a festive gift.

Minister's Corner: Thanksgiving

As millions across the world join to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday the 24th November, the time is used as a means of showing gratitude.

Traditionally the holiday period is a time of remembrance of pilgrims, and also for celebrating new harvests.

Thanksgiving is also commemorated in Canada and in contrast the holiday period takes place during October. However times of thanksgiving can be traced back to Biblical times. Researchers believe that Thanksgiving celebrations are reminiscent of the Festival of Tabernacle, which have been notated in the Old Testament.

The Bible also shows the importance of being thankful. During the times when Jesus fed the 5,000+ (John 6:1-14) and 4,000+ people (Matthew 15:29-38), He would give thanks for the food before allowing them to be distributed out to all the crowds.

In addition, during the Lord’s Supper, Jesus also gave thanks before sharing the food with his disciples.

Shortly after healing 10 lepers, Jesus shows appreciation for the one healed man who returned to him to give thanks for his healing, Luke 17:11-19.

Further Bible scriptures also note God’s happiness towards people who are grateful for His goodness, 1 Chronicles 16:8, 34-35, Ezra 3:11, Psalm 30:12, 97:12, 100:4, 105:1, 107:1 & 118:1, Jeremiah 33:11, Daniel 2: 23, 1 Corinthians 16:34.

Throughout the Bible, we are reminded of the need to give thanks to God. The feeding of the four and five thousand both including Jesus giving thanks before sharing the food and also shows the relevance of thanksgiving. In all things let us always remember to give thanks.

A look into the Books... Nehemiah

The book of Nehemiah centres on the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah himself was a descendent of the Jewish people and among those who were taken into captivity in Babylon and Persia in 589BC, for 70 years.

The main time frame of the book of Nehemiah is based on the postexilic time when the Israelites retuned to Jerusalem.

While in Persia, Nehemiah was the cupbearer of the King Artaxerxes. While working as the cupbearer, the Israelites were granted permission to return to their native land. Following their release the Israelites were discouraged at the desolation of their land and the trouble and exploitation that they were facing from their enemies. The Israelites were left in a dire state, to the point of selling their own children in order to earn finances, (Nehemiah 5:1-2).

Nehemiah had initially remained in Persia but after finding out about the conditions that the Israelites were in and finding out that progression was not taking place, he asked permission to return to Jerusalem to help oversee the reconstruction work that was taking place.

Nehemiah was promoted to being the governor of the area where the reconstruction of the wall was taking place. Before the work began, Nehemiah took the time to go before God and seek direction and strength. Through mourning, prayer and fasting Nehemiah sought direction and wisdom from God on how the rebuilding work should take place (Nehemiah 1:5-11).

In order to complete the construction work, Nehemiah analysed the damage to the wall and organised a workforce that would help to rebuild the wall. While the reconstruction work took place, Nehemiah faced opposition from three distinct enemies, Sunballet, (Nehemiah 4:1); Tobiah, (Nehemiah 4:3) and Gesham (Nehemiah 6:5). These men used rumours, threats and discouragement to try and stop the reconstruction work, (Nehemiah 6).

However none of the attacks brought against Nehemiah and his workforce stopped them from completing the reconstruction of the wall. The workers were always on their guard and even worked with weapons in hand to fight against their opponents, (Nehemiah 4:17).

As a result of their continued work, the wall was rebuilt in less than two months – a record 52 days, (Nehemiah 6:15). On completion of the wall, the opponents believed that God had orchestrated the work, (Nehemiah 6:16).

Throughout the reconstruction work, Nehemiah continued in prayer, seeking for direction from God and for His strength to complete the work, (Nehemiah 6:9). The theme of prayer is seen throughout the book and is a key part of Nehemiah’s success, (Nehemiah 2:1-20, 4:1-14 &6:9-14).

Nehemiah’s work also extended to rebuilding the Israelite’s attitude towards worship. He worked with Ezra, who assisted in interpreting God’s law for the Jewish people. In addition, the reconstruction of the wall worked as a point of inspiration for Christians in the Ancient times to keep on working for God’s glory. Nehemiah was a prime example of a courageous and resourceful leader.

Scholars have stated that content in the book of Nehemiah coincides with the books of 1st and 2nd Chronicles and Ezra. They even believe that Ezra wrote content for the book with extracts taken from passages in Nehemiah’s personal journal.

What is... Tithe?

A tithe is seen as giving 10 per cent of earnings or income. This is usually taken as a portion of financial income, however in Biblical times, giving a tithe extended to crops and food items. The first scripture to note giving a tithe can be found in Genesis 14:17-20, where Abraham gave a tithe to God.

Another scripture relating to tithe in the Old Testament is Genesis 28:20-22. In this passage of scripture Jacob vows to give God ten per cent of his income for His protection and help in returning to his home country.

Overall the giving of tithe was seen as an expression of gratitude to thank God for the provisions that He has made. The book of Leviticus explains that a tenth of all things belong to God, (Leviticus 27:30-32), with the scriptures in Psalms 24:1, 50:10 and 89: 11 going further to reveal that all creation belongs to God. Thus the giving of tithe is returning a portion of what belongs to God to Him.

Tithe was used as a means of maintaining building and maintaining the church, and it was also a form of payment for the Levite.

Of the tithe that the Levites received, they needed to give a tithe of this to God as a heave offering, (Numbers 18-21-32). This tribe was the only one that did not receive a portion of land as an inheritance for themselves. They also worked in the Tabernacle of Meeting as musicians and ministers.

The timings for giving offering in biblical times appeared to be set every three years, as the scripture in Deuteronomy 26:12-15 shows that every third year would be the year of tithing. This passage also shows that tithe was additionally used for people who were widowed or orphaned. Deuteronomy goes on to explain where the tithe should be given, (Deuteronomy 12:5-7, 11-12 &17-18).

Other passages in the Old Testament that relate to tithe giving include, Proverbs 3:9, which states that honour to God is shown by the giving the first parts of your increase to God. Further scriptures also include Proverbs 11:24-25, Proverbs 19:27 & Proverbs 22:9.

One of the key areas relating to tithe giving can be found in Malachi 3:8-12, where the prophet warned the people of God that their withholding tithe from God was seen as an act of stealing from the Church and was a factor of their troubles.

God goes on to state that by giving their tithe, they will release a blessing for themselves to be able to enjoy His bountiful goodness and provisions.

New Testament books contain scriptures that include repetitions of Old Testament passages that relate to giving. One of which can be found in Matthew 23:22, in which Jesus whilst speaking to the Pharisees exposes their outer giving of even their herbs, but not of themselves to God.

Further scriptures relating to giving include Luke 6:38, whereby passage states that giving unto God will result in ‘good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over’, which shall be returned to you.

Other scriptures show that giving should apply to other people as well as to God, as the passages in Matthew 6:2-4. This passage explains that giving should be done discreetly and not for public acknowledgement. Also both 2 Corinthians 9:6-15, and Galatians 6:7, reveal that the manner in which a person gives is exactly the way they will receive their returns.

Furthermore, the blessing of giving can be seen in Philippians 4, during which Paul writes to the people and commends them for their giving to his work and ministry, with a cumulating verse, that reads, ‘My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus’.

Recipes: Thanksgiving Feast - Cranberry & Coffee Fudge

Ingredients: 300ml double cream, 300g Demerara sugar, 300g caster sugar, 2-3tsp coffee essence, 200g dried cranberries.

1. Pour all the ingredients, except the cranberries and coffee essence, into a pot. On a low heat mix constantly until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Once dissolved, turn the heat up to high and boil for 2-4mins.

3. Remove the pot from the heat and add the coffee essence. Place the pot into a bowl of ice water and stir while the fudge thickens. Add in the dried cranberries as the mixture thickens.

4. Pour into a container and leave to cool until set. Cut into cubes and enjoy.

Recipes: Thanksgiving Feast - Turkey Pie

Ingredients: 1kg diced turkey, 500g mixed vegetables, 2 chopped spring onions, 250ml chicken or vegetable stock, 2tbsp flour, 2tbsp crème fresh, 750g rolled pastry, 1 beaten egg.

1. Cook the spring onions in a pan until they soften. Add the turkey and mix until cooked through. Add the mixed vegetables.

2. Pour in the stock and add salt and pepper to season. Add the flour to thicken the sauce and also the crème fresh. Leave to simmer while preparing the pastry topping.

3. On a floured surface roll out the pastry to 0.5cm thickness.

4. Pour the turkey mixture into an ovenproof dish and cover with the pastry topping. Brush with the whisked egg and place in the oven at 200oc until the pie is golden brown.

5. Remove from the oven and enjoy.

The national holiday Thanksgiving is a time of celebration for people across the US so this month we’ve taken some key ingredients as our source of inspiration for the GloryMag recipe pages. So feel free to enjoy some of the dishes below.

Ingredients: 1 medium pumpkin (halved and deseeded), 4 medium sweet potatoes (halved), 200g yam (peeled and cubed), 500ml vegetable stock, salt & pepper, cream to serve (optional) (Serves 4)

1. Place the pumpkin, sweet potatoes and yams into a baking tray and cook at 180oc for 20mins.

2. Remove the baking tray from the oven, scrape the pumpkin and sweet potato and place into a blender with the yam. Blend until smooth.

3. Pour the mixture into a pot and cook over a medium heat. Pour in the vegetable stock and cook for a further 10mins on a medium heat.

4. Serve with bread and optionally with cream.

The climate is one of the stand-out features of Dubai, if you’re after hot weather. You can prepare to experience temperatures that exceed well over 100of (August can see temperatures reach 54oc/ 129of).

There are plenty of unique past times that allow you to make the most of your stay in Dubai. Such activities range from camel riding, sand boarding on quad bikes for fun in the desert sun. For an extreme opposite, you can enjoy indoor skiing, courtesy of artificial snow in the snow dome.

Water activities can see you sailing on the Dubai Creek in one of the traditional water-based vehicles such as the dhow or an abras; or enjoying the waters along the stretches of beaches. Similar activities that can help to keep you cool in the heat could see you travelling to the 42-acre Aquaventure water park, complete with rapids, river rides and slides for a refreshing time.

For sightseeing, you can take a ride on one of the highly developed modes of transportation, to explore Old Dubai. The Dubai Museum can provide you with an insight into the city. The Bastakiya district is noted as being one of the last remaining areas of Old Dubai.

Buildings have been restructured to maintain their traditional and historic look. Another choice location is the Al Ahmadiya School, located in Deira. This is the first school that was built in Dubai which has been restored and visitors are able to enjoy free entry into the school.

If you’re after some retail therapy, there are several options to choose from. For spectacular shopping, you can choose the Dubai Mall – the world’s biggest shopping, leisure and entertainment centre – which contains an ice rink and even an underwater zoo! If you’re planning ahead, choosing to go in January or February would mean that your travels coincide with the Shopping Festival.

The cuisine also has many different treats that you can enjoy such as shawarmas one of the traditional dishes, which are flatbreads containing meat, salad, pickles and seasoned with spices.

For dining out you can choose the well-known restaurant Nobu Atlantis or Seafire, which is also at the Atlantis, another one of Dubai’s exceptional hotels. For those who’d rather enjoy home comforts, fast food chains such as KFC, Starbucks and TGI Friday also make up options for getting a bite to eat.

When travelling to Dubai you’ll be sure to experience unique and spectacular activities. The country seeks to surpass expectations in all that it does and will be sure to do the same for you whatever you choose to do.

A look into the Books... Daniel

The book of Daniel is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Scholars believe that the book was written by the prophet and Kinsmen Daniel in the seventh century BC which also coincides with the Israelites captivity in Babylon and Persia, which lasted for approximately 70 years.

The book is described as having three sections, with the first being chapter 1. This chapter explains the background details of the book and the historical timeframe.

The next section covers chapters 2-7 and describes the experiences of Daniel and his friends, including the miracles performed by God in the midst of trials and also of God’s wisdom and display of discernment through Daniel.

The final section covers chapters 8-12 and details words of prophecy, dreams and prayers that relay the vision of final judgement.

The book begins with the description of the city of Jerusalem being taken over by the Babylonians and the Israelites being taken captive.The King Nebuchadnezzar, then calls for choice men to be trained in the culture of the Babylonians.

Out of all the men chosen, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends – Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah – stood out from all of the others. In line with the Babylonian customs, their men had their names changed. Daniel was named Beltshazzar, Hananiah became Shadrach, Mishal was called Meshach and Azariah was named Abed-Nego. Despite the significant changes in the lives of these men, they remained true to their Jewish culture and their God.

They shunned the rich food that the King ordered the men to eat, instead choosing simple dishes of vegetables and water. After their trial period, Daniel and his three friends came across healthier and stronger than the people who ate the king’s food, (Daniel 1:15-16). After their time of learning, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego were tested before the King and found to be the wisest of all the people, (Daniel 1:19-20).

Following this are stories of God’s wisdom being given to Daniel to explain the king’s dream, (Daniel chapters 2 & 4) and the writing on the wall (Daniel chapter 5). Daniel chapter 4 also covers God’s sovereign power, in allowing king Nebuchadnezzar to lose his understanding and live in the wilderness before returning his sense back to him.

The book goes on to explain God’s miraculous protections for Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego, when they were thrown into a furnace so hot, that the guards standing close by perished, (Daniel chapter 3) and the well-known passage of Daniel in the Lion’s Den (Daniel chapter 6).

These passages describe the protection that God will give His people if they follow His ways. The remaining chapters, 7 to 12 cover the visions that Daniel had which related to events that would unfold in future times to come. One of these events was the Israelites return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the temple (Daniel chapter 9).

Themes in the book of Daniel include dedication to God, standing strong in the face of great persecution and also of the importance of developing a strong relationship with God, all of which are extremely important elements of sustaining a strong Christian faith.

Who is... The Holy Spirit

“…I tell you the truth. It is your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you…” John 16:7

The Holy Spirit is described as a person rather than a thing, so for this month we will be looking at who is instead of what is.

The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity (Father, Son Holy Spirit). A number of names such as the Holy Ghost, Helper and Comforter have been used to describe the Holy Spirit and how He operates. Images of doves or fire have been used as symbols of the Holy Spirit.

References to the Holy Spirit are noted more frequently in the New Testament, and He was described in detail by Jesus just before His crucifixion as a Helper for Christians after Jesus ascends into heaven.

In John 1:32–33, he explains his vision of the Holy Spirit coming in the form of a dove and resting upon Jesus. This would show that Jesus is the One who will enable people to be baptized by the Holy Spirit.

However there have been references in the Old Testament (Genesis 1:26) and also direct mentions to the Holy Spirit, (Psalms 51:11, Isaiah 63:10, Joel 2:28–32, Ezekiel 37:1).

As Jesus described the Holy Spirit as a Helper, He has been seen to provide assistance to Christians in several Biblical scriptures. One of the scriptures that show the helping nature of the Holy Spirit is when He is described as helping Christians when they pray,(Romans 8:26).

The Holy Spirit was present when Jesus was being baptised by John (Matthew3:16) and also when the Church in Acts was baptized to speak in tongues, (Acts 2:1–4).

The Holy Spirit has also been seen as protagonist. He moved Jesus into the wilderness for His 40 days of fasting and also Philip after he baptised the Ethiopian Eunuch, (Acts 8:39).

Travel: To the Motherland

With October marking Black History Month, we’ve used this as a source of inspiration for our travel pages. One of the most diverse continents on Earth, Africa is now made up of 55 countries, and is home to the newest country in the world South Sudan.

Countries such as Ghana, Senegal, Angola, Mali and, Nigeria are situated in Africa, and the continent is home to more than a billion people. Africa has so much to offer in terms of culture, history, food, sports, music and so much more. So take a look at some of the countries we’ve selected and indulge in the destinations that Africa has to offer.

Tanzania

This Eastern country boasts the tallest mountain in the whole of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, which is a wonderful location for walking and hiking. Depending on the time of year you travel to Tanzania you can view the mountain entirely covered in snow or just the cap, making it an easier journey of you choose to hike. Another experience to make the most of is with water sports. Great locations for scuba diving include around Zanzibar and Pemba, furthermore kayaking can also be completed around several coastal locations. Alternatively you can spend your time looking into activities related to the slave trade, or viewing Stone Age sites containing rock art, some of which are around 30,000 years old.

South Africa

Several locations in this country make for ideal holiday getaways, with Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban to name but a few. The most recent World Cup, in 2010 was held here and saw the eyes around the world firmly placed on this African country.Travel spots include the flat-top Table Mountain in Cape Town. Another unique sight if you’re lucky to get see them is the African Penguin.

Egypt

One of the most significant countries in Biblical times, Egypt has been home to a number of significant personalities including Joseph, Moses, the Israelite population and also Jesus Christ. The country, whose ancestors stem from one of Noah’s sons, contains significant features, such as the Pyramids and the River Nile, which make it a great destination for sightseeing.

Kenya

Home to the largest city in East Africa, Nairobi, Kenya is a wonderful choice for an African Adventure. The Nairobi Animal Orphanage is home to animals that have been left isolated but are cared for by the orphanage. Visitors can even get up close and personal with cheaters, who have grown to be tamer than their average counterparts found in the wild.

Morocco

Morocco is another great choice for an insight into the diverse cultures of Africa. Known as the gateway between Africa and Europe due to its closeness with the tip of Spain, the country is well known for its cuisine, spices and market shops. Cities such as Marrakesh renown for mixing old and modern elements of city living or Casablanca by the sea and the capital Rabat will all have sights of attractions that will allow you to delve into the cultural wonders of Morocco.

Several other natural beauties such as the world’s largest waterfall – Victoria Falls – can be found at the Zimbabwe/Zambia border.Beautiful island spots such as the Seychelles and Mauritius also make up fantastic holiday getaways.

With Black History Month well underway we've taken a look at a unique cooking school, that exploring the varieties of tastes across Africa. Akhaya is London’s first cooking school that’s dedicated to African cuisines.

Participants of all levels can learn to prepare and enjoy cooking lessons that will dip them deep into traditional dishes, full of flavour, from regions all over the continent.

Preparation time: Overnight, then 20 mins

Cooking time: 5 mins (Makes at least 10 – 15 fritters)

Ingredients:
1. 100g black eye beans, or peeled beans
2. 1 small onion
3. ½ teaspoon of Akhaya© scotch bonnet chilli flakes (optional)
4. Salt and pepper, to taste
5. Sunflower Oil
6. 150ml water

Preparation:
Soak beans in a bowl with at least double the amount of water. Leave overnight or for at least 4 hours. Once beans have softened, rub beans between palms of hands to remove skins. Fill bowl with water, so that skins rise to the top, pour water away with skins into a sieve and continue peeling process until no skins remain.

Method:

1. Roughly chop onion and add to blender with peeled beans and chilli.
2. Add water and blend until beans form a smooth paste.
3. Transfer paste to bowl and add salt and pepper to taste.
4. Fry spoonfuls of paste in hot sunflower oil until golden brown.
5. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
6. Enjoy!

Recipes: How to make fruit smoothies

The perfect start to the day – breakfast in a cup. So break out the blender and get whizzing. Just make sure you use really bright fruit, and sweeten the taste with a little sugar or honey.

• Serves 1 – Preparation 2 mins, if that – cooking none

Mango, passion fruit and coconut

½ of a medium sized mango, peeled and flesh cut out away from stone
100ml (31/2 fl oz), coconut milk, 2 passion-fruits halved and juice rubbed through sieve, 2 teaspoons of fresh lime juice, 150 ml (5 fl oz) orange juice , A handful of ice cubes.

1. Simply put all the ingredients for the smoothie into a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can put everything into a large measuring jug and blend with a hard held blender, moving it up and down until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and serve

Recipes: How to make muffins

These bun-like muffins originated in the USA and are very easy to make. You can even prepare the bowls or dry ingredients and wet ingredients in advanced and simply mix them together just before you cook. The trick to fluffy muffins is to fold the wet and dry ingredients together as briefly as possible until just combined; don’t worry if the mixture still looks a little lumpy. The nutritional information below is per muffin, so if you’re calorie counting, you’ll need to multiply up, deepening on how many you have.

Marmalade muffins
• Make 10 - Preparation 5 minutes - cooking 20-25 minutes
• Energy 240 kcals – protien3.8g – carbohydrate 37.5g – fat 9.3g – satursted fat 5.6g
Fibre 1.0g - salt 0.80g – added sugar 17.2g.

200g (7 oz) plain flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, A small pinch of salt, 40g (1 ½ 2 oz) stone ground wholemeal flour, 75g (3 oz) caster sugar, 175 ml (6 fl oz) milk, 1 medium egg, beaten, 100g (4 oz) butter, melted, Finely grated zest of 1 orange, 100g (4 oz) thick-cut marmalade, 2 tablespoons Demerara sugar, for sprinkling

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 oC/400oF/Gas mark 6. Line a muffin tray with 12 deep paper cases.

2. Sift the plain flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Stir in the wholemeal flour and caster sugar. Beat the milk, egg, melted butter and orange zest together, add to the bowl of dry ingredients with the marmalade and stir until only just mixed.

3. Spoon the mixture equally into the paper cases and sprinkle on top some Demerara sugar. Bake for 20-25 minutes until well risen and golden brown. leave cool for 5 minutes , then serve warm. The muffins are best served on the same day they are made.

A look into the Books... Matthew

Matthew is the first book of the New Testament and also of the four Gospels.

The book of Matthew is based on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and is noted by the disciple himself.

Key subject areas in the book include the genealogy of Jesus Christ, starting from Abraham through to Jesus himself. In addition, the birth of Jesus is also included in the early chapters of the book.

Other areas noted in the book include the Sermons on the Mount, in which Jesus taught on several issues that relate to maintaining a Christian lifestyle and developing relationships with God and fellow men. This includes the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) and the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13).

A number of scriptures in the book of Matthew, as with many New Testament books, show links and origins with parts of the Old Testament, such as Matthew 2:6, which links with Micah 5:2.

Miracles that Jesus performed throughout His ministry are also included in the book of Matthew such as the healing of the leper, the Centurion’s son and Peter’s mother-in-law, (Matthew 8:2-16), the feeding of the 5,000+ (Matthew 14:14-21), walking on water (Matt. 14:22-33) and many others.

In addition to the miracles, healings and ministry, Jesus also speaks through parables to provide warnings to Christians on issues such as descriptions of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 13:24-33), forgiveness (Matthew, 18:23-35) and service (Matthew 20:1-16).

Events that relate to Palm Sunday, such as Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey (Matthew 21:1-11), the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:17-30) can be found in the book, and also His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39-46).

The latter chapters of the book detail the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, (Matthew 27). His assent into Heaven is also included as well as His direction towards Christians, saying: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19).

The book of Matthew links the old with the new and marks a fresh beginning through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

What is... Baptism?

Matthew 3:13 “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him.”

Baptism is the act of immersion in water and it has been carried out for centuries. It was first noted in the New Testament, when Jesus was baptised by John in the River Jordan.

The baptism took place just before Jesus was taken into the wilderness for His 40 days and of fasting and testing, prior to the start of His ministry, (Matthew 3:13-17).

The time of Jesus’ baptism can also be noted as one of the only times in the Bible where God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all present at the same time. Biblical references to baptism involve a person being fully immersed into water and this is something that has taken place in Church pools, and even rivers and ponds.

The act of Baptism has been described as representing the beginning of a new life and having a fresh start in Christianity, which the Disciples of Jesus Christ also took part in, (John 3:22-23).

Baptism by the Holy Spirit opposed to immersion in water is another form of baptism that is mentioned in the Bible such as in Acts 2:1-18. A further example of baptism in water is noted in the book of Acts, when an Ethiopian eunuch was baptised by Philip, after hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, (Acts 8:35-38).

You could see a llama during your stay or even catch a glimpse of Chile’s national bird the Andean Condor.

Ghana

Situated in West Africa, this country has so many opportunities for schools. Here you will have the chance to build up communities, experience unique cultures and not to mention enjoy the sunshine weather. The country is also steeped with historical values. Along with this, Ghana has several natural spots such as the Boti Waterfalls just outside of the capital Accra, and the stretches of gold coast beaches. A trip to Ghana can provide gap year travellers with a number of volunteer opportunities. Thailand

This Asian location provides a vast amount of volunteering opportunities. Travellers can choose to help in orphanages or teach English to native speakers based in the country. Thailand is steeped in culture and the national dishes such as, Thai curries, are some of the most renowned in the world. So you could also take some cooking tips back with you for your campus cuisines and impress your roommates.

These are just a few of the locations where gap travellers venture into, but other popular destinations can include countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Around Australia, where you can not only take part in volunteering opportunities but enjoy the amenities that each country has to offer.

Recipes: How to make stir-fries

Stir-frying is a traditional Chinese cooking technique that is very easy to master. To check if the vegetables are cooked, pierce them with the tip of a knife: the vegetable should feel as soft as butter.

Fragrant pork and vegetable stir-fry

2 teaspoons dark soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, 1 teaspoon dry sherry, 1 teaspoon corn flour, 175g (6oz) of well-trimmed pork tenderloin (fillet) or boneless loin chops, 2 tablespoons sunflower oil, 2 crushed garlic cloves, 2 finely chopped spring onions, 2 teaspoons of freshly grated root ginger, 1 thinly sliced onion, 1 carrot, peeled and sliced on the diagonal, 50g (2oz) baby sweetcorn, split in half lengthways, 1 red pepper, halved, seeded and sliced, 50g (2oz) sugar snap peas.

1. Place the soy sauce, sesame oil and sherry in a bowl, then stir in the cornflour until smooth. Cut the pork against the grain into small, thin strips and add to soy mixture, stirring to combine. Cover with cling film and set aside for 10 minutes, or up to 24 hours in the fridge.

2. Heat a wok until it is very hot, then add the sunflower oil and heat until it is almost smoking. Remove the pork from the marinade with a slotted spoon and stir-fry in the wok for a few minutes. Transfer to a sieve or colander to drain off all the excess oil, leaving only one tablespoon behind in the wok.

3. Add the garlic, spring onions and ginger and stir-fry for 20 seconds, then tip in the onion and stir-fry for another minute. Add the carrot and stir-fry for 2 minutes until softened, sprinkling over a tablespoon of water if the mixture is getting too dry. Add the sweet corn and pepper and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, again adding a little water if necessary, then add the sugar snap peas and stir-fry for another minute.

4. Stir in the oyster sauce and toss the vegetables until coated. Return the pork to the pan and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until the pork is tender and heated through.

Variations
Beef and vegetables with black bean sauce
Replace the pork with fillet or sirloin steak that has had all the fat removed, and use black bean sauce instead of oyster sauce.

Nutty vegetable stir-fry
Omit the pork and oyster sauce. Mix together 2 teaspoons each of mild curry paste, soy sauce and honey. Add an extra carrot and yellow pepper to help bulk out the vegetables. Tip in 50g (2 oz) salted cashew nuts with the sugar snap peas, then pour over the curry paste mixture and stir-fry for another minute or two until well combined.

What is... Being Born Again?

John 3:3: (NKJV) ‘Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’.

The term Born Again refers to the decision of following Jesus Christ and encourages a new mind frame that views Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of a person’s life.

In the Bible passage John 3, a man called Nicodemus, speaks with Jesus, questioning how eternal life can be received. Jesus in return states that man needs to be born again for this to happen.

Becoming Born Again is also seen as an act of faith which shows that a person believes that as they give their life to Jesus Christ, they will in turn take on His character and actions and identify with His crucifixion and resurrection.

Sin has separated man from God, but being Born Again is the way to be reconnected with God. At this point, salvation and redemption are received.

The term Born Again is also known as the ‘New Birth’ and is an activity that involves the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

Faith in Jesus Christ encourages a person to believe that He is the saviour and by believing this they become Born Again, the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ work as a bridge between man and God the Father, (Romans 8:26).

The scriptures in 2 Corinthians 5:17, explains that ‘If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation’, a theme that is parallel with the decision of being Born Again.

A look into the Books: Genesis

Genesis is the first book in the Old Testament and of the entire Bible. The writing of the book is attributed to Moses, who is seen as the writer of the Pentateuch – the first five books of the Bible – as well as other passages including in the Psalms.

Being the first book of the Bible, Genesis noted several beginnings and firsts, such as the creation of the Heavens and Earth, the creation of creatures and mankind and also the first birth, murder, death, instruments and rainbow.

The book of Genesis begins with the creation of the Heaven and Earth and then goes on to detail the creation of the sun, moon, stars, land, seas, animals and then concluding with the creation of man (Genesis 1:26).

Genesis also details the fall of man into sin after disobeying God’s command, but soon after describes His plan to redeem man and create a new beginning for man.

The book of Genesis details the new beginning for man as described in the flood, when Noah and his immediate family, as well as pairs of every animal on the earth, were taken into an ark when the rains fell and the waters below the earth poured out for 40 days, (Genesis 6 – 9).

Events such as the tower of Babel, at which various languages were introduced and nations developed, as well as the complete destruction of the towns Sodom and Gomorrah are noteworthy occurrences in the book of Genesis.

Following the floods, Noah and his family began new lineages of people; the most notable is Abraham. Described as the father of the Israel, his descendants include a number of well known figures in Biblical history including their son Isaac, who was born to him and Sarah, when they were aged 100 and 90-years-old respectively. The book also includes the birth of Ishmael, who was born through Sarah’s maidservant Hagar, (Genesis 16).

Abraham’s faith was tested when he was told to sacrifice his son Isaac and the actions mirror God’s choice to give His Son Jesus for the same purpose, (Genesis 22:1 – 19). Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah, leads to the birth of Jacob and his brother Esau, the pair illustrate sibling rivalry to a tee and also go on to develop the beginnings of Israel’s early history, (Genesis 25:19 - 28)

Following Jacob’s deception and moving away from the family, he meets Rachel who he marries, albeit after initially marrying her sister Leah. Jacob’s seed leads to the birth of 12 sons, who formed the 12 tribes of Israel, Genesis (29:31 – 30:24).

Jacob’s last born son, Joseph, was sold to the Egyptians by his brothers. From the palace, to prison and then back into the palace, the events unfolded to be a blessing in disguise as Joseph’s placement in Egypt cumulated in him becoming the country’s Prime Minister and saving his family, from the severe famine that affected stretches of nations across Northern Africa and the Middle East. (Genesis 37 – 50).

Genesis truly is a riveting read, full of intrigue, suspense and God revealing His ultimate power and love for humanity.

Recipes: How to make Pizzas

These authentic pizzas are fantastic vehicles for all sorts of toppings, but don’t overload them or the base will become soggy. I have listed my familiy favourites below which always go down as a treat. If you don’t want to make your own pizza bases, there is now a selection of ready-made bases available.

Basic Neapolitan
350g (12oz) strong white plain flour, plus extra for dusting, 1 x 7-g (1/4-oz) sachet easy-blend yeast, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing, 225ml (8 fl oz) warm water, 2 teaspoons of semolina or dried white breadcrumbs.

For the Topping
8 table spoons of passata rustica, A few fresh torn basil leaves, 25g (1 oz) freshly grated parmesan cheese, 1 x 50-g (5-oz) mozzarella, drained and roughly chopped, Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

1. Place flour, yeast and a teaspoon of salt in a food processor fitted with a dough attachment, or use a bowl and a wooden spoon if you don’t have a processor. Mix the oil and warm water in a jug.

2. With the motor running, slowly pour in the oil mixture through the feeder tube or stir by hand and mix until and mix until you have a soft, stretchy dough. Knead for 5 minutes in the machine or for 10 minutes by hand on a lightly floured work surface

3. Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, rub the top with a little more oil, then cover with a clean, damp tea towel. Set aside at room temperature for 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

4. Punch the down with a clenched first. Remove from the bowl and knead for couple of minutes until smooth, then cut in half and roll each half out on a lightly floured surface to a 25-cm (10 inch) circle. Sprinkle the semolina onto to large baking sheets and place the pizza bases on top.

5. Season the passata to taste, then spread over the pizza bases, leaving a 1-cm (1/2-inch) border around the edges. Scatter over the basil, drizzle with a little olive oil and scatter the Parmesan and mozzarella on top. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the base is crisp and the cheeses are bubbling and lightly golden. Remove from the oven and drizzle over a little more olive oil. Cut into wedges and serve with a green salad.

Variations
American Hot
Prepare the bases with the passata, basil and olive oil, then scatter over 50g (2 oz) sliced pepperoni sausage and 50g (2 oz) drained, sliced jalapeno chillies (from a jar). Finish and serve as described above.

Garlic Mushroom And Parma Ham With Rocket
Heat a little olive oil and sauté 50g (2 oz) sliced mushrooms with a crushed garlic clove for 1-2 minutes. Prepare the bases with the passata, basil and oil. Scatter over the mushrooms. Tear 3 slices of Parma ham and sprinkle top. Finish and bake as above. Scatter over a little rocket and finish with a drizzle olive oil and some parmesan.

Charity: Childreach in Tanzania

Numerous Biblical passages highlight the importance and benefits of children, Psalms 127:3, describes them as ‘heritages from God’, while Jesus in Mathew 19:14, spoke out against His disciples for their attempts in stopping the young children from coming towards Him, adding that a humble childlike mentality was needed for living a productive Christian lifestyle.

A venture into the North-Eastern city of Moshi in Tanzania saw Gifty Ofosu-Mensah, travel with her colleagues for a charity effort. The venture known as the Reed Specialist Recruitment and Childreach International Workshop linked the recruitment organisation with young children in Tanzania. Its aim is to provide young people in the East African country with the opportunity to develop skills for employment and create more awareness of the attributes needed for an extensive working life.

The unique point of the scheme is that it has a focus to children who were part of vocational training centres (VTC). Such children were likely to have been orphaned, from a single parent household or from poor areas in the community. Some of the children had missed out on getting into secondary education, and so the VTC provided them with the opportunity to develop skills in either tailoring or carpentry that could lead to work and further opportunities in the future.

The week-long trip brought Gifty and her colleagues face to face with dozens of children who took part in a range of activities such as workshops, role plays and CV Masterclasses that taught them about the importance of employment and also of the best ways to secure working opportunities. In addition, business planning exercises. The team from Reed was also shown locations and facilities where the VTCs were based, such as in Mahida and Uru North.

Local business and micro-financing organisations including the Kilimanjaro Porters Association, VETA, SIDO and the Kilimanjaro Chamber of Commerce all took part in the activities and discussions that related to recruitment processes. They spoke about issues that could be introduced in order to increase the employment opportunities for children taking part in the VTC.

By the end of the week, the children had shown an expansion of their aspirations and a keen interest in a range of areas apart from carpentry and tailoring and brought out a determination to excel, bring fulfilment to the purpose.

Minister's Corner: The Presence of God

I read somewhere once that our faces are a mirror to our soul. And so our feelings are mirrored in our facial expressions. As a general rule this must be true, since when we are happy, our faces will naturally smile, our happiness cannot be completely hidden.

Also, when we are pleased our faces reveal satisfaction, and when we are angry our faces reveal what we are feeling. And so by the appearance of someone’s face you can always tell their true feelings and emotions. I think this is also true of our spiritual lives, if we have God’s presence upon us, it will be revealed naturally maybe not literally in the way we look, but in the way we act, and in our attitude and in just the general daily things.

As we see in Exodus, Moses’ face literally revealed the glory of God. And I just want to talk to you today about continuingly reflecting the presence of God.

1. The glory of God was upon Moses because he constantly drew near to God.
In order to experience the presence of God we have to drew near

There are many references in Exodus where Moses spent time alone with God, often far away from the Israelites and sometimes for as long as 40 days.
Before God’s presence came upon Moses, Moses was told to stand near to him,
verse 21, ‘Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock” And so Moses had to be near God, before he could see the goodness of God pass by.

Because Moses drew near to God we are told in 33:11 that ‘the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend’.

The definition of friend is, ‘a person whom one knows, likes and trusts, and whom one is with them in a struggle or cause’ Moses spent time with God and so Moses trusted God, but also God trusted Moses, and God as a friend was therefore with Moses through any problems he encountered when leading the people out of Egypt.
Because of the time that Moses spent with God drawing near to him, he knew God intimately and so was able to have a close friendship. The result of this friendship allowed God to reveal himself to Moses, reflecting his presence on Moses. Consequently Moses’ face became radiant, so God’s presence upon him could be seen physically.

Verse 13 says, ‘if you are pleased with me, teach me your ways, so that I may know you and continue to find favour with you’
Pastor Danny Hodges in his book, ‘Spending time with God’ interprets this passage as Moses simply saying, ‘Lord I want to get to know you’. In order to be able to reflect the presence of God I think that we also need to get to know God and spend time with him.

We are told many times in the New Testament that Jesus often withdrew to spent time alone with God,

Mark 1:35: ‘Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.’

Luke 5:16: ‘But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
This shows the importance of spending time alone with God in order to experience the presence of God.

In his book, Victorious Christian Living, Alan Redpath stresses the necessity of being alone with God: For the greatest transactions of a man's experience are made, not in a church, but behind closed doors.

In the same way, the disciples spent time with Jesus, getting to know him before they really experienced the presence of God in the form of the Holy Spirit. So In order to fully reflect the presence and glory of God, like Moses we need to draw near to God, and spent time alone with him.

2. The Glory of God made Moses a distinguished man. At the start of verse 12 Moses was asking God for reassurance that God will be with him when he is leading the people out of Egypt, and God said that he will send his presence with Moses, and this presence is what will distinguish Moses from the all the other people.

Verse 14-15 says: 14 The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." 15 Then Moses said to him, "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?" 17.We see here that Moses was distinguished from the other people by the presence of God upon him.
34:29 says, ‘When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD’

Moses had a physical attribute which distinguished him; however I think we don’t have to have some kind of glorious light upon us, or a radiant face, to be a distinguished Christian, rather we only need the presence of the Holy Spirit active and at work in our Christian lives to be a distinguished Christian.

Acts 4:13 says, ‘When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.’

The rulers, elders and teachers of the law saw the power of God upon Peter and John because of their outward reflection of the power of God; Just like Moses when he came down from Mount Sinai the presence of God could be seen clearly. The teachers of the law who had just thrown Peter and John in jail earlier on in the passage had seen a distinguishing factor in them through the active work of the Holy Spirit.

Someone once said to me that ‘powerless Christianity is unacceptable and inexcusable’. And I think that when looking in the New Testament we can see that is true. There are countless examples of disciples and believers of Jesus who continually reflect the presence of God and work of the Holy Spirit, and consequently are distinguished by the presence of God in their lives.

Charles Finney was a well-known evangelist in the 18th century, who continually reflected the presence of God. When holding meetings in New York he visited a large factory to look at some machinery. He walked into the factory floor and without saying a word, at the sight of him one of the operatives broke down and wept under a sense of conviction, one by one each operative fall onto their knees, until all machinery had to be stopped while Charles led each of them to Christ. The presence of God was upon him so much that he did not even need to say a word before people started to repent and break down crying.

The presence of God is what makes us a distinguished Christian so that we can show God’s glory

3. The glory of God was upon Moses because he asked for God’s presence to be with him.
Moses asked God to show him his glory. The Hebrew word translated as show in this context means ‘to reveal to the eye or to the mind’. So Moses was actually saying simply, ‘Lord let me see your glory and let me understand it’

'I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.' (Exodus 33:19)
Moses asked for God’s glory and so God allowed his goodness to pass over him. The well known verse in Matthew 7:7 says ‘ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find; knock and the door will be open to you, for everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened.’

In order to reflect the presence of God we need to ask for the Holy Spirit. In the same way the disciples waited and prayed for the promised gift and in the upper room the Holy Spirit fell upon them and they began to reflect the glory of God.

Conclusion
In the Old Testament a cause and effect relationship occurred with Moses. Whenever Moses would spend time in the Lord’s presence and speak with the Lord, this glory would appear on his face. However this was limited to Moses at that time, and did not happen to the Israelites, they could see the radiance but did not experience it themselves. Paul states clearly that the glory of God seems to be limited to only Moses because they were under the old covenant.

Under the new covenant, God’s presence is not limited to one man. All believers have access to the presence of God and in fact this presence is even greater than what Moses experienced. Paul states in 2: Corinthians 3:7-9: “Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness?”

I often think sometimes that I can’t really experience God in the same way that Moses did because it was so long ago, but when reading this I realized that we can reflect God’s presence far greater than Moses ever did.

We are shown here that anyone can have access to the presence of God. When we spend time in the Lord’s presence our faces reflect His glory in a greater way than even Moses ever did. At the same time, we are being transformed into His likeness. As we are transformed in this way, the glory that radiates from our faces is always increasing. But it is by choice whether we choose to show and reflect God’s glory or whether we choose to hide it away.

What is... The Lord's Prayer

(Matt. 6:9–13 & Luke 11:1–4)

The Lord’s Prayer is a portion of scripture that details a guideline to prayer. In the book of Matthew it is noted as being taught as a part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, while in the Gospel of Luke, the prayer was taught to the disciples by Jesus after they heard him praying.

Each point in the prayer covers an area that is seen as relevant to a Christine lifestyle, including forgiveness, God’s provision and His power.

Taken from the New King James Version, the first part of the Lord’s Prayer reads,

‘Our Father who art in Heaven’: The starting point of the prayer shows that faith must be used to come to God in prayer. Seeing God as a Heavenly Father requires faith and also humility.

‘Hallowed be thy Name’: Honouring the Name of the Lord in prayer is also a point that is mentioned and something that is required of Christians, Ezekiel (36:23)

‘Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven’: This section points out that God is the overall Ruler of the world and that His plans and purposes will be completed on earth, as it is in heaven.

‘Give us this day our daily bread’: addresses asking God for all provisions that are needed for daily living such as food, but can be extended to other needs such as shelter and clothing.

‘Forgive us of our sins as we forgive those who sin against us’: points to the need to receive forgiveness from God for our wrong doings, but also to forgive people who have wronged us.

‘Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one’: This point highlights the need for God’s help in times of trials and challenges and also the need to depend on His protection.

‘For Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory’: The final point rounds everything off by stating that all power and glory belongs to God forever and ever.

Although the length of the prayer is short, it covers a wide range of areas and is seen as a framework for communication with God, which can be expanded on. It covers the need for honouring God and also treating others as we want to be treated. In addition, the opportunity to ask God for protection and also provision are included in the Lords’ Prayer.

For a solid career in music, a good voice is usually seen as a prerequisite. However the singer Melinda Doolittle proved that passion and persistence are just as important.

Missouri native, Melinda had a great interest in singing from an early age, but responses coming from teachers and even her family revealed that she was ‘tone deaf’.

In a recent television interview she revealed that her mother warned her to ‘pray hard’ concerning her voice. This however did not stop her. She took on singing lessons, joined her high school choir ultimately developed a strong and unique voice. After years of coaching and knock downs, her performance paved the way for a new sound, which was recognised by all who heard her.

She was now being encouraged by the very people who put her down and her vocal talent was becoming more and more noted.

Spurred on by her passion for music, Melinda entered the well-known US TV Show, American Idol in 2007. She finished in a respectable third place.

Shortly after her time on the programme, she released her debut album, Coming Back to You in 2009, which reached the top three in the US Indie charts.

Her creative talents extend beyond music, as in 2010 she released her book, ‘Beyond Me: Finding Your Way to Life’s Next Level’. In it Melinda describes her time during and after American Idol.

With persistence, experience and talent, Melinda is an example that all things are possible to those who believe.

A look into the Books: Proverbs

Known as the wisdom book of the Old Testament, the book of Proverbs is a unique passage in the Bible. The word Proverbs (a short, statement about human nature) helps to explain the format of the scriptures as they are written in short verses.

Throughout the 31 chapters of the book, subjects covered relate to several areas of life such as finances, business, work, marriage and family, as well as personal relationships with people and with God.

The purpose of the book of Proverbs is detailed in the very first six verses, stating that the content is to develop wise thinking among the readers. Proverbs 1:7 goes on to reveal the starting point of wisdom.

Proverbs was written by King Solomon, the son of King David. Shortly after he was crowned, King Solomon asked for God to give him wisdom in order to make wise decisions and to know how to deduce right from wrong (1 Kings 4:32), this is something he received among other things.

Stemming from his great wisdom, King Solomon produced a majority of the book of Proverbs, (Prov. 10:1–22:16 and Prov. 25—29). However other contributors added to the content to the book including King Lemuel and Agur.

Other books or passages in the Bible that have been written by King Solomon can be found in Psalms, Ecclesiastes and the Songs of Solomon.

The book uses unsuspected objects such as ants or other insects to illustrate the benefits of hard work and skill, (Prov. 6:6–8 & Prov. 30:24–28). In addition, the book also details a striking juxtaposition; that a God of love can hate, (Prov. 6:16–19).

A well-known passage in the book of Proverbs details the qualities of a wise woman, portraying her as a wife, mother, business woman and a charitable, compassionate follower of God, Prov. 31:10–31).

The overall purpose of the book is to develop and maintain wise living, which in turn brings about all things for a positive and joyful lifestyle. The book of Proverbs reveals that true wisdom is found in respect, obedience and reverence for God.

Forgiveness is described as the act of no longer holding resentment or anger towards someone who has done something bad towards you.

There are several references in the Bible that relate to the act of forgiving. One of the points mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer relates to forgiving, and is also the only point of the prayer that Jesus expands on after reciting it to His disciples (Matt. 6:14); illustrating the importance of giving forgiveness in order to receive it from Him.

This is described by the parable of a servant who receives forgiveness from His master, only to refuse forgiving another servant. This leads to his forgiveness being turned into punishment. (Matt. 18:23-35)

The Bible explains that forgiveness is a prerequisite so that mankind can be akin with God. Through sin and bad actions, man separated Himself from God. But by His might He chose to make a way of forgiveness through Jesus’ Crucifixion at Easter time. Psalms 130:4 explains that we receive forgiveness from God to show His might and bring reverence towards Him.

The act of forgiving also involves forgetting what happened, just as Psalms 103:12 describes how God will no longer remember our wrongs.

It is only through forgiveness that man can get back in line with God and in that same token, we should forgive others. This shows that we are following in His footsteps.

In Ephesians 4:32, Christians are encouraged to be tender hearted and forgiving. It’s a call that appears to be compulsory in order to show our walk with God.

Travel: Boat Trips

For a sail closer to the UK or if you want to be behind the steering wheel, a boating trip along one of the rivers could be the choice for you. The UK is a great spot for a boating holiday where you can take in some of the natural wonders that are on offer.

You can take in industrial and cultural sites along the riversides or stop off at one of the major cities. Travelling along the rivers of Cambridgeshire will open you up to 150 miles of waters. Trips can start from the River Ouse at Ely and then heading on south before going on to Bedford, taking in the historic and cultural attractions such as the natural reserves and quaint cottages. While in Cambridge, you can enjoy a music concert from the world-renown university’s choir.

Another famous county, Oxford provides the perfect spot for travelling on the waters. The river running through this county, stretch from Birmingham down to London, where you can start at either end and pass through idyllic spots such as Warwick Castle, Coventry Cathedral and the Canal Museum.

Travelling along the Yorkshire waterways provides the best of both worlds with the option for either calm sails along the rivers or an active canal trip. You can enjoy scenic and historical views such as the industrial heritage sites or the Eureka Science Centre.

If you want to travel further afield, regions around and within France provide ideal options. You can travel along the coastlines and stop off to enjoy the sites, cuisines and music inland. Brittany to the West of France and the Canal de Midi or Camargue in the south are choices that allow you to take in the wonders that France has to offer.

You can also make the most of travelling to neighbouring countries, if you’re near to the eastern coast, with Alsace being next to Germany and Ardennes bordering Belgium, which in itself has numerous canal and river options for travelling along.

A well-known spot can be found in Italy. Home to the ‘City on the Sea’, Venice is the ideal location if you want to make the most of travelling by boat. The structure of the islands means that getting around by boat is the easiest and probably quickest option of getting around.

You are able to enjoy the city’s own Venice Beach and take a stroll on one of the streets before hopping onto a boat for reach one of the cobbled streets. However for an authentic Italiano trip, a gondola ride across the waters is a must!

A look into the Books: Job

The book of Job reveals the life of a man deeply rooted in God. Biblical scholars have explained that the contents of the book were written by Moses and took place before Abraham lived.

Job was a very wealthy man, noted as being the ‘greatest of all the people of the East’, (Job 1:3). He had masses of stock in live cattle, a large family with ten children, and was also described as a blameless and upright man who feared God. His lived a prosperous life, honouring God and working hard in order to protect his family. (Job 1:5)

However, a conversation took place between God and Satan, wherein Job is described as a unique man that shuns evil (Job 1:8). The devil states that only God’s protection and provision is keeping Job in line with Him and that without it he would forget about God.

With this in mind, God allows all that Job has to be destroyed and taken away including his children, livestock and health, even losing his reputation and companions. His wife speaks to him, saying he should curse God and die because of the misery that he is going through.

A point that Job makes after his wife’s comment is that “Shall we accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” a point that is illustrated in Ecclesiastes 7:14, revealing that God’s works and ways cannot be explained sometimes, but there is always a relevant purpose and outcome – a point again that is mirrored in Isaiah 55:9.

Three friends from distant places – Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Sushite, and Zorphar the Naamathite – eventually heard about Job’s situation and come in the hope of providing comfort for him. However their words of comfort instead eventually turn to accusations and discouragement for Job.

Chapters 3-37 are based on the dialogues between Job and his friends. In spite of Job’s dire situation he never puts the blame of his current predicament on God, rather pours out his emotions and grief before Him. This proved that his faith and focus was on God, as he couldn’t see or understand why all his losses were happening, but he still remained faithful to Him.

In chapters 38-41, a dialogue between God and Job takes place, wherein God reveals His might and power that was evident before, during and after the world was created. In Job 38:4-41, God describes His creations such as ordering the seas and waves (verse 8-11), the snow (verse 22-23) and the stars (verse 31-32).

The final chapter 42 reveals God’s restoration for Job. His family return to comfort him (verse 11), he has a further 10 children as before, but his livestock is doubled in size (verse 12). His three daughters are described as the most beautiful women (verse 15) and he lives to see his great, great grandchildren (verse 16).

Job’s actions and statements overall, prove that his dependency was never based on material possession or even on people, but on God alone; a worthy role model of Christian living!

Recipe: Thai-Style Halibut with Egg Noodles

4 x 150 g (5oz) halibut or turbot fillets or steaks, 1 packet egg noodles, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, ½ bunch spring onions, shredded 2 carrots, finely shredded, 100g (4oz) mixed peppers finely shredded, Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish.

For the marinade
100g (4oz) onions, finely chopped, 3 cloves garlic, crushed, 25g (1oz) fresh ginger, peeled and grated, Juice and zest 1 lemon and 1 lime, 4 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of ground coriander seeds, 1 tablespoon of soft brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon of chilli powder, or to taste, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

1. Combine the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl and mix well. Lay the halibut in a non-metallic container and spoon the marinade over. Leave to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight.

2. Cook the noodles in salted boiling water until tender. Meanwhile, warm the marinade in a small pan.

3. Heat the sesame oil, and add the onions, carrots and peppers. Cook briefly, then add the noodles and toss together.

4. Griddle or sear the halibut for 3 minutes on each side. Arrange the noodles and halibut on the serving plate, garnish with coriander and spoon around the warm marinade.

Minister's Corner: Our Walk with the Lord and His Career Choice Us

We often live our Christians lives and walk with God with a mindset that we have choices. However, our experience of making choices before we were saved compared to that when we are saved should be completely different. Nevertheless many believers still continue to allow their “old man” to make choices. The key question for any young man or woman is, how do I go about choosing my career? Do I follow my passions and be led by my God-given gift(s)? How can you be sure you’ve made the right choice– especially if you’ve already embarked on a career you always had an ambition for?

The truth is that in Christ we don’t have or make our own choices. We submit to God’s will for our lives:

• Matt 26:39. Jesus said – not His will, but God’s will be done.
• Matt 6:9-10, talks about God’s will being done.

When we grasp the revelation that the will of God should determine and influence our career choice(s) – our choices then become a discovery of what the will of God is. It is God’s choice for our careers that matters not ours. At this point it doesn’t matter what we have or haven’t achieved career wise, because God’s will comes to either affirm or confirm that we are on the right path, or redirect and guide us to His choice.

His will assures us that nothing in terms of our gifts, talents, passion, skills, etc, is wasted. Before David was anointed King by Samuel, his imposed career i.e. a shepherd boy, prepared him for God’s career choice. All of David’s shepherding skills and abilities helped forge his kingly role. We can say the same of Moses and Joseph.

The Apostle Paul had a zeal for righteousness but his passion was misplaced. This led him on a career path of murder and assassination. However, when God’s will redirected this passion, he became a Pastor, Evangelist, Prophet, Teacher and an Apostle! He learned to become all things to all men that he might win some to Christ!

What set these men apart? What caused them to find and excel in their careers? It was not just because they walked in the revelation that “God’s will be done” in their lives, but they also had a unique “love” relationship/walk with God. Your love walk with God will open the door to His career choice(s) for you (or at the very least confirm your career you’re in now). Rom 8:1, Acts 17:28. NB: God’s chosen career for you is not necessarily an easy path – study Joseph in the Bible!!!

• If you are not walking in this love relationship with the Lord, it is harder to find and know what His career choice is for you or to receive His peace that you are currently where He wants you to be even though you may have not sought His will in the first instance!
• This love relationship enables the Lord to filter our passions and desires and put us strategically where He wants us to be; and to have the greatest influence to bring about His will and purposes.
• This love relationship needs to be very strong, steadfast and intimate in order to be able to experience a divine shift or change in your career and life circumstances. Read Deut 6:1-6, 1 Kings 3:3 “And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David...”

LET’S LEARN FROM DAVID – HIS WALK WITH THE LORD AND GOD’S CAREER CHOICE FOR HIM

Read Psalm 78:70-72

• His father/family’s career choice (or maybe David’s choice) – David was to be a shepherd.
• God’s choice born out of David’ love relationship with God - a Leader/King; Prophet, Priest unto God; a Song Writer and Musician.

NB: God always has more for you than you aspire for yourself

How did David get God’s attention?

• Out of all his brothers, this young boy David simply loved God with all his heart. Psalm 18:1, verse 20 – 24.

• I believe this love was developed as he saw God and His awesomeness, when he led sheep, through the mountains, hills, valleys, still waters and rivers, he watched over them at night looking at the moon, stars and the heavens. He saw God’s handiwork and fell in love with Him.

• This love would cause David to sing songs from his heart to God, inspired him to learn to play the harp and other stringed instruments, to trust God for his security and learn how to use the sling with precision against the lion/bear (Goliath found out the hard way!).

NB: David had no idea of what God was planning for him career wise. However, although he wasn’t in the “know”, David continuously developed his God–given gifts and talents – the sling, harp, song writing, dance etc.

Young adults are multi-talented and gifted but a majority fail to develop their array of talents and gifts and often only concentrate on those relate to their particular careers. Don’t fall into that trap! God’s career design is for you to be multi-talented and gifted. For example, I believe David was so developed/perfected his ability with the sling that he could use either his left or right hand. His mighty men could do it, why not David? 1 Chronicles 12:1.

Next steps

• Recognise God’s lordship over your life i.e. allow God to have His own way concerning your life. Col 1:15-18. Let Him become pre-eminent in your life above other; superior; be the predominant person, foremost in your thoughts, highly esteemed and to have absolute rule.

• Know that God will only work for your best interest. However, His choice doesn’t necessarily mean everything is going to be smooth sailing! Be prepared for rejection from friends and family, backlash, moments of pressure, Bathsheba’s and Potiphar’s wife etc,

• Our love walk with God enables us to distinguish between our Preference – motivated only by benefit for ourselves; and Conviction- in which we are called to live by which comes by REVELATION. God will always lead us by conviction via the Holy Spirit. When we are led in this way, even though we may struggle along the career path – we YIELD to God and entrust Him with our careers/lives (Joseph).

• We’ll know that we have reached this place because yielding brings us to the place of content. (Phil 4:10), because we know that God is bringing us into fulfilment.

• Consequently, your love relationship with God creates an atmosphere in such a way that it doesn’t matter what happens in your work place – what you’ll begin to experience is the FAVOUR of God.

Recipes: How to make burgers

Home – made burgers are a doodle to make, and it’s easy to vary the flavours, too. The trick is not to use lean mince – the additional fat of ordinary mince helps to keep them moist and juicy.

Makes 6, Preparation 15 mins, Cooking 10 mins
900g (2 lb) minced beef
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 teaspoons minced red chilli
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
2 teaspoons dried oregano
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

To serve
6 sesame–seed burger buns or crusty rolls
Split in half lettuce leaves
1 x 170 g tub guacamole
1 x 170 g tub chilli tomato salsa
150 ml (5 fl oz) soured cream

1. If you are using a charcoal barbecue to cook these burgers, light it 30 minutes before you want to start cooking. If using a gas barbecue, light it 10 minuets beforehand. Alternatively, use a heavy-based frying pan or ridged cast iron griddle.

2. Put the minced beef, garlic, onion, Minced chilli, paprika, oregano, 1 teaspoon salt and some black pepper into a bowl and mix together with your hands. Divide the mixture into 6 and shape into burgers about 2.5cm (1 inch) thick by pressing the mixture into a 9 cm (3 ½ inch) plain pastry cutter. Cook the burgers over Medium heat for 5 minuets on each side. Toast the burger bun or rolls cut-face down around the burgers for the last 2-3 minuets Of cooking.

3. To serve, put a few lettuce leaves on the bottom Half of each bun and top with the burger. Spoon On some guacamole, chilli tomato salsa and soured cream, Top with the other halve of the bun and eat.

Recipes: Spaghetti Bolognaise

For the spaghetti: 400g of Spaghetti (or any other pasta you prefer)
For the Bolognaise sauce: A large onion (chopped), a bell peppers (chopped), 540g of mince meat or Quorn, 2 seasoning cubes (e.g. maggi or Know), a tin of plum tomatoes (drained), handful of mushrooms (chopped), a jar of bolognaise sauce, salt and pepper to taste. (serves 4)

• Boil the spaghetti accord to the packet instructions.
• Cook the onions and peppers in a heated pan until soft.
• Add the mince, salt and pepper and stock cubes to the pan.
• Next, add the plum tomatoes and mushrooms.
• Finally pour in the bolognaise sauce and leave to simmer.
• Check the pasta and once cooked, drain and place in plates.
• Top with the bolognaise sauce and enjoy.

Recipes: Garlic & ginger Calabash

For the calabash: A medium calabash (peeled and cubed), a medium onion (chopped), 10g ginger (grated), 3 garlic cloves (finely chopped), 2 chilli peppers (finely chopped), 120ml vegetable stock, salt and pepper to taste. (serves 4)

This simple and delicious dish is perfect for those who like a little kick with their dish.

• Add oil to a pan and once heated add the onions and cook until they soften.
• Next, pour in the calabash and cook until soft.
• Add the chilli, garlic and ginger and mix in well.
• Pour in the vegetable stock and leave to simmer.
• Add salt and pepper to taste.
• Serve with rice, pasta or with bread.

Sureway Events: Higher Praise

Higher Praise was greatly felt at Sureway International Christina Ministries on Easter Saturday, with an evening full of music, dance and ministry.

The church launched its annual music night, and included musical ministrations from the Sureway Choir. The song selection included Sureway’s praise anthem Igwe, My Praise and Victory – a perfect tie in with the Easter celebrations.

The IMPACT praise & worship got the evening going with songs that got the audience into a mind frame of worship and then into an attitude of praise.

The evening also featured the guest artist Miss Tai, whose song ministration included the tracks ‘Growing Pains’, which encourages listeners to know that despite the hard times in life, trusting in God will always bring you through. Her second track of the evening, called ‘God’s Love’, detailed that it’s God’s love for us that keeps us strong and intact.

Adding to the evening of Higher Praise, there were dance ministrations from Leanda Opoku, Keiysha Mckoy and Portia Achampong, which left audience members speechless and filled with reverence for the Lord God.

The evening also included words of ministration by Pastor Kwame Adzam from Trinity Baptist Church, who edified the congregation with the aptly titled message Highly Exalted. Quoting from the scriptures in Isaiah 6:1-7, he explained that to truly worship and give God the Highest praise, we need three things:

To See God for ourselves – Relating to the first verse of Isaiah 6, he explained that we need to experience God for ourselves and see Him as our all in all; this can take place through time spent in His presence in prayer and Bible study. With this point, the Pastor also stated that worshiping God is a 24-hour lifestyle.

Realise God’s presence and worthiness – was the second point and linked to verse 5. He described that in order to give God the highest praise, we need to see worshipping Him as an honour and privilege.

Knowing that God made us to be worshippers – was the final point to be used for explaining the ministration. Pastor Adzam explained that we were made to worship, and that this should be given to God. Linking this point to verse 7 of Isaiah and also other scriptures from Revelation 4:5, 5:9-10 and Psalms 22:3, he said that in doing so, we engage with God’s presence and vice versa, allowing Him to dwell with us and us with Him.

In conclusion, he encouraged the congregation to know that all things that we could ever need come through our abundant praise to Gods.

The night began and ended with music ministrations as the Choir led the congregation into joyous dancing and singing and left everyone highly lifted and ready to give higher praise.

Sister Churches: Sureway Christian Centre Nottingham

Situated in close proximity to lively town life as well as beautiful and peaceful English countryside, Sureway Christian Centre has been opened in Nottingham since the 23rd May 2010.

The ministry has been growing from strength to strength ever since and a quick chat with Sybil Ofori-Darko paints a better picture about the ministry and its purpose.

Following an extensive time of fellowship with the Sureway International Christian Ministries in south London, Sybil and her family moved to Nottingham, to help with the setting up of this new ministry.

The whole family have worked with great effort for the purpose of the church ministry’s growth in Nottingham.

Describing the surrounding, Sybil says: “Nottingham has all the facilities and trends of a big city, pleasantly contrasted by the quiet and peacefulness of the English countryside.”

But the outer surroundings are not the only inspiration point for the ministry. The desire to build up a vibrant Christian basis in the area was apparent; with the scripture encouraging us to make disciples in every nation (Matthew 28:19) working as a focal point for their prayers and purposes concerning the mission.

Sybil explained that the presence and power of God’s love has moved in great and mighty ways for people coming to the church saying that, “each individual that has visited or joined as a member has experienced spiritual growth and encountered Christ in a unique way.”

She also said that, [this] is and will continue to be our vision and our hope as God adds to the church.”

By the grace of God, developments will continue to take place for God’s kingdom and celebrations will abound.

One festive occasion that’s set to take place soon is to commemorate the church’s one year anniversary. Sureway Christian Centre will be commemorating the occasion with an official commissioning service and celebration on Saturday 4th June 2011. Members of Sureway International Christian Ministries will all be attending.

On a positive note Sybil concluded by saying, “We believe that the Lord will move us further on as a church and through us bring the gospel with all its benefits to everyone who hears it.”

Music: Refreshing sounds for the soul

David Adesokan, a Nigerian native now based in the US, has a passion for Christ that is revealed through his debut album entitled ‘Thirsty’.

The album is a collection of songs that take inspiration from several music genres, including Contemporary, Caribbean gospel and even Classical.

With a background firmly grounded in music, David’s resume includes working as a worship leader, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer.

During the past 14 years, he has served as a Music Director, Minister of Music, musician and Youth Ministry volunteer working across various cross-cultural denominations, with the aim of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Speaking about his influences for the album, David said: “I get inspirations for songs when I get into times of personal worship and study of God's Word, especially in the book Psalms."

“These intimate moments of inspiration are evident on Thirsty, as David gives various dimensions of praise to God with lyrics right out of the Bible. On "Been So Good," he sings "your love floods my heart, like a river overflowing, all the work you've done through Calvary, speaks of grace so overwhelming.”

Thirsty communicates the cry of a man's heart for revival and a deeper yearning for the presence of God, at the same time expressing profound gratitude to Him for His enduring goodness."

David said: “This is primarily a worship project and I want people to really take away a renewed thirst and desire for more of God and all that He has in store for us in His Presence."

But music isn’t the only avenue of worship that David uses, he has written a book, entitled ‘Desperate for Him’, revealing his personal need for God’s presence and finding it through worship.

Minister's Corner: If Not for God

‘If Not For God’ is the product of trying times but has been and continues to be a source of encouragement for the founder as well as the tens of thousands that are part of the Facebook group.

Oluwatunbi Akindayomi was a young man growing up in Nigeria. Born in Ibadan, soon afterwards he moved to Lagos to be with his father. His grandfather Pa Akindayomi, christened him with his name, only to pass away five days later to be with the Lord. Oluwatunbi credits his grandfather as being a pinnacle part of his life, whose devotion and love towards God encouraged him to develop his own faith.

Oluwatunbi remained in Lagos and was brought up in a Christian household, but did not take his faith seriously until he tragically lost his brother in an accident in 2006.

Thereafter in 2007 he started experiencing dreams that would direct him closer to God. He explains that, “In this dream I was begging someone bigger than me not to kill me. I was not a born-again then even though that I was born into a Christian home. I woke up to quickly pray about this dream.”

Not long after he found himself online searching for scriptures from the Bible to encourage him when he stumbled across a website that was set up to provide daily messages based on the Word of God. This encouraged him to set up his own daily devotional and thus ‘If Not for God’ was founded.

Readers can join in either on Facebook, where the daily messages reach at least 47,000 each day or also view the messages on the website. The website was not the last stop for Oluwatunbi; in 2008 he began to write his first book, entitled ‘God the Good shepherd’ which is based on the well-known Psalms 2

He recounts specifically that on the 29th of March 2008 it was a Sunday morning and states “I was preparing to go to church when I started to read my Bible (Psalm 23: 1-6) I understood every chapter I read. I was impressed and encouraged to push on with the help of the Holy Spirit.

God the good Shepherd has six chapters; each one is the breaking down of what I read from each verse of Psalm 23:1-6, which I allied to my past, present and the promise of God for me.

He explained that: “I struggle with words talk less to put them together. I wrote this book through the encounter I had after the death of my brother. Where I’m today is not even close to the goal ahead but with God I know I will be there.”

He also adds: “Like one of my mentors John C. Maxwell says: Don’t change your circumstances to improve your life, change yourself to improve your circumstances.”

He encourages those reading this article, in saying “don't let anybody tell you that the sky is the limit, there are footprints on the moon!”

“I pray that your legs will take you to your promise land and every limitation in your life shall exist no more in Jesus name.”

The high street, designer boutiques and Internet fashion houses have their collections for spring and summer 2011 well underway.

Charity: Show your Heart to Help

The Heart to Help’s recent chat with GloryMag gave a brief insight into the charity’s purpose. The charity aims to provide financial support and develop the communities of people living in India.

One of the avenues used by the charity is the Heart to Help sponsored walk. The walk takes place each year and has been on-going for the past five years.

Each year the walk purposes to raise finances for a different area of development. The previous two walks have helped to build two accommodation blocks for a Children’s Home in Mabla, known as the West Bengal Boys & Girls’ Home. The money raised from the 2010 sponsored walk will be used to build up a Children’s home for 40 destitute boys.

On average the sponsored walks raise about £5,000; however the walk in 2010 raised a total of £8,000. This year’s walk aims to exceed last year’s achievement and will be set in Kent’s countryside starting from Tonbridge through to Penshurst, a 5 mile (8 km) walk.

A look into the Books: Psalms

A look into the books provides an insight into passages in the Bible. We’ll cover memorable and notable figures, as well as look at key areas in the book.

This month we’ll take a look at the book of Psalms. Meaning ‘Sacred song’, the book is a compilation of songs written by numerous authors including Kind David, his son King Solomon and also Moses.

Another of the distinguishing features of the book is its size. The book of Psalms contains 150 individual chapters or psalms, making it the longest book in the bible. It also holds the longest chapter in the Bible, (Psalms 119) and includes the very middle verses in the entire Bible, (Psalms 118:8-9). The book also has the shortest chapter in the Bible (Psalms 117).

Despite already being the longest book in the Bible, an addition five psalms had been written to accompany the book of Psalms, but these were not added to the finished compilation.

A majority of the Psalms were written by Kind David, a well-known noble. Several of his Psalms read like a diary entry, showing his fears and heart’s cry, as well as his praises and passion towards God, all working as sources of inspiration for the Psalms that he wrote.

In the popular scripture, Psalm 23, King David highlights God’s protection and provision for him and His power to raise him up above his enemies. Another Psalm written by Kind David shows his anguish after being chased by his own son Absalom, (Psalms 3) and also his trust and boldness that is rooted in God.

As well as the Psalms mentioned above, other chapters have linked to significant parts in the Bible such as Psalms 22 which describes the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Psalms 78 highlights the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt into their promised land, which was compiled by Asaph.

Psalms 42 explains the author’s – the sons of Korah’s – dependency on God and states that He is the source of encouragement when feeling disheartened. Another Psalm also written by the sons of Korah, Psalms 45, is known as the wedding Psalm for its verses that relate to a marriage taking place.

Psalms 51, written by King David, shows his desire to seek for God’s forgiveness and get back in line with Him after committing sin. Psalms 91, written by Moses describes God’s protection over His people, with verses 1-2 and 7-8 both providing graphic explanations of the security God provides.

Psalms 120-134, also known as the Pilgrim Psalms, would have been sung by people travelling up to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Psalms 127 explains the relevance of God’s presence and the blessings He provides to His followers. Psalms 136 emphasises how ‘God’s mercy and love endure forever’.

The final Psalm, (Psalms 150) is a short song that encourages people to praise God using everything possible.
